What a delightful and heartwarming story!

April 22, 2025

Dear Margaret Churchill, I just finished My Raccoon Family, and I have to say—what a delightful and heartwarming story! Your love for nature and animals shines through every page, making the reader feel as if they, too, are part of this unique and special raccoon family. The way you bring these curious, intelligent creatures to life is both charming and educational.

I especially appreciated how you blended personal experience with storytelling. Was this book inspired by real encounters with raccoons? Your descriptions are so vivid and full of affection that it’s easy to imagine each little raccoon’s personality.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story! My Raccoon Family is a book that will surely captivate animal lovers of all ages and remind us of the beauty of the natural world. I look forward to reading more of your work!

There is so much to love about this book. The illustrations are adorable, the story is heartwarming, the education about the Raccoon behaviour is invaluable and it instills a love and respect for wildlife, even those regarded as pests.

Engaging Text

Professional Illustrations! This book is not a hack job. The images are very nice, artistic , and clear. Anyone who can appreciate the power of a visual will enjoy this element of the book.

It has a nice amount of text. There is enough writing here to work with as a reader and as a teacher of reading. Some definite ground for reading with kids here, and enough text for accomplished young readers to enjoy.

A fun (and true) story. This book shares an interesting story and could be used as a reading choice and mentor text for a young reader to then step into the role of author and write their own adventure.

For these reasons, I can recommend My Raccoon Family and I must say it was a read I did enjoy (even as a grown-up).

What a ray of sunshine your wonderful book is. Your book will engage young and old alike, reducing unwarranted fear and giving people an opportunity to see wildlife in an entirely different light-one filled with wonder and respect. What a great contribution, Margaret.

Colourful pictures

This book has colourful pictures that really depict what is going on, more than just words. I liked hearing about the nature of the raccoons and how and why they do certain things. I really enjoyed learning these new things. I can’t believe how clean they really are, even after being near the compost pile. Real life story! Watching them grow and learn is a fun thing to do.

Although I read widely, I am always entertained by the new entries in the children’s literature category, as well. There is much to explore in the swath of literature, and I recommend anyone perusing children’s lit (even the most serious adult).

That being said, here’s what I liked about My Raccoon Family:

1. Professional illustrations. This book is not a hack job. The images are very nice, artistic, and clear. Anyone who can appreciate the power of a visual will enjoy this element of the book.

2. A nice amount of text. There’s enough writing here to work with as a reader and as a teacher of reading. Some definite ground for reading with kids here, and enough text for accomplished young readers to enjoy.

3. A fun (and true) story. This book shares an interesting story and could be used as a reading choice and mentor text for a young reader to then step into the role of author and write their own adventure.

For these reasons, I can recommend My Raccoon Family and I must say it was a read I did enjoy (even as a grown-up).
